**Government to Introduce Legislation for Solar Energy Integration in Trinidad and Tobago**
Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales have announced that the Government is considering new legislation to enable citizens to sell surplus electricity generated from solar power back into the national grid. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote renewable energy in Trinidad and Tobago.
At a sod-turning ceremony in Brechin Castle, Couva, for Project Lara's first of two solar photovoltaic plants, Dr. Rowley highlighted the upcoming regulatory adjustments. "Very soon, you will see the Government presenting legislation in Parliament to ensure that private sector investments in solar power, whether at businesses or homes, can sell their excess energy back into the grid," he said.
Following the ceremony, Minister Gonzales elaborated on the plan, explaining that the new legislation will facilitate private citizens, both commercially and domestically, to install solar panels on their properties. This move aims to reduce dependency on the traditional electricity grid and T&TEC by allowing individuals to generate their own solar power.
Gonzales expressed optimism that the Government would soon be able to share the complete policy with the public. He reminisced about a past initiative to promote LED lightbulbs, which failed due to a lack of incentives for citizens. "The current pricing structure for electricity in Trinidad and Tobago does not encourage energy conservation," he noted.
This announcement comes as the Regulated Industries Commission (RIC) considers a proposed increase in electricity rates, highlighting the importance of reviewing electricity pricing to support T&TEC's financial health. Gonzales hinted at additional energy conservation strategies under consideration by the Government.
"Many initiatives are underway, and all the pieces are coming together," he said, emphasizing the need for public education on energy conservation. This initiative aims to lower the nation's carbon footprint and preserve the environment by conserving energy and enhancing gas availability for industrial use.
In related infrastructure developments, Gonzales revealed that the construction of a 220,000-volt circuit from the Union sub-station to the Gandhi sub-station would be completed next week. This upgrade will enable the full dispatch of 770 megavolts of electricity from Trinidad Generation Unlimited’s (TGU) plant at Union Estate in La Brea, strengthening the national grid.
This comes after the nationwide blackout on April 29, 2022, caused by a fungus-infected palmiste tree falling on a 220,000-volt line in the area. The Government's proactive measures aim to prevent such incidents and enhance the resilience of Trinidad and Tobago's electricity infrastructure.
